The Green Gables Shore extends through the middle of the island from the Red Sands Shores to the upper coastline, along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. This area is most famous for the legendary and lovable Anne of Green Gables, and the fabulous beach areas of the Prince Edward Island National Park at Cavendish and Dalvay-by-the-Sea. A tourism destination for decades, you’ll find shopping, amusement rides, go-kart rentals, a raceway and lots of water sport activities along the primarily whiter sand beaches. There are lots of lighthouses and secluded harbours to explore, golf courses to conquer, and a wide variety of accommodations, restaurants and campgrounds to suit any budget. Attractions include the Kensington Railyards & Welcome Centre, the Anne of Green Gables Museum, Lucy Maud Montgomery Heritage Museum, and Avonlea – Village of Anne of Green Gables. Remember fresh seafood is abundant everywhere with Lobster Suppers offered in several locations. This shore is also the home of the world-famous Malpeque Oyster. Deep-sea fishing and kayaking are popular at North Rustico Harbour.

The North Cape Coastal Drive explores the western area of Prince Edward Island, and is easily accessed after crossing the Confederation Bridge (from Port Jourimain, New Brunswick to Borden-Carleton) and following Rte #1A towards Summerside (less than 30 minutes away). This area is most famous for ocean-fresh seafood – including the Malpeque Oyster; the natural phenomena of North Cape at the northern most tip; and the strong Acadian, Scottish and Mi’kmaq cultures along its shores. Summerside is a charming seaside city with a hometown feeling, and you will find a wide array of services, and accommodations offered. Several attractions include an attractive waterfront with shopping, Air Force Heritage Park, the Acadian Museum, the International Fox Museum, and the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts. Travelling clockwise you will find beautiful provincial parks along this Drive including the Cedar Dunes Provincial Park at scenic West Point. At Cap-Egmont you can visit the Bottle Houses and at O’Leary the Potato Museum & Antique Farm Machinery Museum offer various exhibits. At North Cape, the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Northumberland Strait converge over the largest natural rock reef in North America. Explore the Wind Energy Interpretive Centre and enjoy the panoramic views of the ocean and gigantic windmills. As you travel back down the opposite shore see the cliffs at Kildare Capes and the Northport Rear Range Lighthouse at Alberton. Visit Lennox Island on Malpeque Bay to learn of the Mi-kmaq culture at the Lennox First Nation. Ellerslie is the home of the PEI Shellfish Museum, where you will learn about the Malpeque oyster and the Oyster Industry.

The Points East Coastal Drive explores the eastern area of Prince Edward Island, and is easily accessed by vehicle ferry from Pictou, Nova Scotia, docking at Wood Island, PEI. If you entered on the Confederation Bridge from New Brunswick, take the TCH #1 from Borden-Carleton, leading through Charlottetown and onward to Wood Island. This area is most famous for it’s fabulous beaches – from the spectacular dunes at Greenwich – to the ‘Singing Sands’ at Basin Head – and the expansive beach at Panmure Island and the dramatic sunrises over the ocean. This area features the popular ferry crossing to Pictou, Nova Scotia from Wood Island and the ferry to the Isles de Madeleine from Souris. Explore the museums and lighthouses all along this coast, beginning at the Wood Islands Lighthouse and Interpretive Center at the ferry terminal, to the East Point Lighthouse and Welcome Center at the most northern tip. The Panmure Island Lighthouse offers fantastic views of the expansive beach and the Point Prim Lighthouse is PEI’s oldest built in 1845 and a National Historic Site. At Greenwich, the PEI National Park features some of the most spectacular dunes on the island and at Kingsboro stroll the ‘Singing Sands’ at the Basin Head Provincial Park. Other attractions include the Orwell Corner Historic Village, Orwell; the Basin Head Fisheries Museum near Kingsboro, the Elmira Railway Museum & Miniature Railway, the Roma at Three Rivers National Historic Site near Brudenell and the Buffaloland Provincial Park, with an 100-acre enclosure where buffalo graze at Montague. The Georgetown and Brudenell areas are popular for their golf courses.

Named for the sands colour along it’s coastline, the Red Sands Shore encompasses the lower middle of the island, along the Northumberland Strait. From the Confederation Bridge at Borden-Carleton, you are less than a half-hour to Summerside, or about 45 minutes to the capital city of Charlottetown. Take time to explore Gateway Village as you exit the bridge, featuring lots of unique shops, the Marine Rail Museum, 2 Lighthouses, and an information bureau on site. This coastline is most noted for its fresh seafood, shopping, red sand beaches, stunning views of the Confederation Bridge; and the vibrant and historical city of Charlottetown, where the Fathers of Confederation met in 1864 to plan the creation of Canada. You will find several historical sites to visit and the downtown area is busy with local talent performing at pubs and lounges. Explore the waterfront along Victoria Park and water activities at Peakes Quay. Nearby Cornwall is home to Red Rock Motor Sports and at Rocky Point, visit the Skmaqn-Port-La-Joye -Fort Amherst Historic Site with wonderful views of the harbour. There are three lighthouses and two provincial picnic parks in this area which now leads to the charming Victoria-by-the-Sea.
